The danger of completing a work is that you are never really done. As I look at Pilgrim’s Trail in an effort to capture some of the social and theoretical questions I have raised I have also found myself wandering back to my first novel Capitulation and contemplating rewriting it as well. I think Capitulation loses people on several levels because it is written in chronological order and the first two chapters are about aliens that people can not identify with. The book is also very complex because of so many characters involved in the story. I wanted to make it a book that people in almost any culture could identify with and that is why there are so many different characters. I was also in somewhat of a Hemingway frame of mind when I was writing it and wanted to be spare on description because I like to have the reader create images of the scenes and characters themselves and with that the book could have easily been twice as long and easier to follow because the reader would be able to identify characters by environment, situation and association..
So here I sit, wondering if I can convey the importance of potential social change to our society within the context of my story, Pilgrim’s Trail, and at the same time make it entertaining as well.
I know that some of my subjects upset people because I call certain social beliefs into question, but realize that I am doing this with facts and my hope is to make the world a better place. Some of the beliefs that I have called into question cause severe divisional lines to be drawn in American culture and if these ideas could be reduced, removed or dropped then people could begin to come closer together for the benefit of all.
Thanks for reading, I hope all are doing well.
